Basic Simple Syrup Recipe

Simple Syrup is a great recipe to have on hand. From iced coffee to fruit salad, this simple concoction is good for more than just cocktails. Having used simple syrup in our Thirsty Thursday recipe this week, we wanted to give you guys a basic simple syrup recipe.

Simple syrups are simple in that they are always made using a 1:1 ratio. That means that you are always using equal parts sugar and water. You can adjust how much you make according to need, keeping in mind that a plain simple syrup will last up to three weeks in your fridge, while a flavored one will last up to one week. 

What You'll Need:

  • Water
  • White Sugar
  • A Pot

For this week's recipe I used a 1/2 cup of water and a 1/2 cup of sugar. Place your ingredients in a pot on the stove over medium heat and stir occasionally until the mixture is clear. At this point you'll know that the sugar has dissolved into the water. If it is still cloudy, then the sugar hasn't fully dissolved and you should continue heating until it is no longer cloudy. Remove from heat and let cool before using. 

I love having simple syrup around, especially in the summer when I'm always grabbing a cold drink. From lemonades to iced coffees, this works great as a sweetener, since the sugar is already dissolved, so you avoid any graininess in your drinks, while having them perfectly sweetened to your taste. 

I also love adding a bit of flavor to my Simples. My favorites are mint and vanilla, but your options here are endless and only limited by your imagination! When adding a flavor, simply wash the herbs you're using and toss them into the pot with the sugar/water mixture, allowing them to steep while the sugar dissolves. Then strain them out of the syrup once it has cooled and store in your fridge in an air tight container. My mint simple is usually drizzled over a fruit salad and I'm always getting requests for this on special occasions, like Christmas breakfast. Just pour over your salad and stir. Vanilla is my go to flavor in my iced coffees, with this I use a vanilla bean, sliced open and stirred into my syrup mixture to really capture that vanilla flavor.
